News from MS Chellamuthu Trust

Madurai, India-based MS Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation (MSCT&RF) celebrated World Mental Health Day in October by publishing this plan to help alleviate and cope with metal illness.

News from FOHRD, India
The High Court of Tamil Nadu has given a landmark order directing the lower judiciary and police officials to treat the apprehended prostitutes as victims of trafficking and they should not be penalised and sent to prison. Instead they have to be sent to rehabilitation/protective homes run either by government or NGOs.

Tree cheers!
An Indian civil servant, SM Raju, has come up with a novel way of providing employment to millions of poor in the eastern state of Bihar. His campaign to encourage people to plant trees effectively addresses two burning issues of the world: global warming and shrinking job opportunities.

TME spells AIDS help
Thare Machi Education was formerly known as the Starfish Initiative but due to confusion with several other charities we reverted to the name that was originally registered with the Charity Commission. Thare Machi means starfish in an Indian language. Why starfish? – because of a story I heard in Uganda about a young girl walking along a beautiful beach and the tide was going out and thousands of starfish were left dying. She went along and threw them back into the water.

Christmas concert for Kids for Kids
A candlelit Christmas concert organised by Kids for Kids takes place on Thursday December 10. Venue is St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey and the event, which features The Fanfare Trumpeters of HM Grenadier Guards and aims to raise money for children in Darfur, Sudan, starts at 7pm.

TAMWED November newsletter highlights
Highlights from TAMWED’s November newsletter include the sad news that Chair Gill Gorbutt has died after a long illness. Gill was hugely popular and actively involved with many community projects. She will be missed by many of those who referred to her for sensible and thoughtful advice

Going through old email messages and selecting appropriate stories is part of the job of editing the GLI English website. However, since GLI Chairman and Co-Founder Robin Rowland died at the end of March, glancing at those messages, many from Robin himself, has been particularly painful. However, one message in particular summed up Robin’s GLI philosophy. It concerned the Akshara network’s newsletter Livelihoods.
